Alkaline Balance for Superior Health

 

Most of our immune systems are being weakened by a losing battle with bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeasts and molds. Our tissues and cells need to maintain a proper level of alkalinity to function properly.

There is growing recognition that the most significant first step you can take towards good health and to protect against sickness and disease is to maintain a healthy pH balance. An acidic body environment is also lower in oxygen and provides a breeding ground for bacteria, viruses, fungus and mold. Slightly Alkaline Vegetables: artichoke, asparagus, brussel sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, leeks, peas, rhubarb, turnips, watercress, and zucchini.

Beans and Legumes

Moderately Alkaline: lima beans, soy beans and white beans.

Slightly Alkaline: Lentils and tofu.

Alkaline Fruit

Slightly Alkaline: coconut, grapefruit, lemon and lime.

For oils, use olive oils to maintain a positive pH balance in preference to vegetable oils. Goat milk is slightly alkaline as opposed to dairy products from cows which are acidic. For a sweetener choose stevia as opposed sugar or honey.

The more acidic a food is the less of it you should eat. Meat tends to be moderately to highly acidic and so too are most grains. The grains that are alkaline include buckwheat, quinoa and spelt and you can eat these grains to your heart’s content. Of vegetables, mushrooms and potatoes are the most acidic. Of fruits, dried fruits are the most acidic and moderately acidic fruits include apple, apricots, bananas, berries (all types) fresh figs, grapes, honeydew melon, mangoes, oranges, papaya (paw paws) peaches, pineapple, and watermelon.

While you can certainly include acidic fruits in your diet (since most fruits are acidic), the key to restoring an alkaline pH balance is to eat a diet comprising mostly of vegetables and augmented by meat (or other complete protein), fruit, nuts seeds, oils, and grains.

What in The World is Acid and Alkaline Body Chemistry?

 

Acidic and alkaline body chemistry refer to the pH, or potential hydrogen, balance within the body. If we have the optimal acid/alkaline balance, we have blood chemistry balance, or homeostasis.

This subject can be confusing, but it is an important one to try to understand, so I will do my best to explain it to you in a way that can be easily understood.

Have you ever wondered why certain environments attract different things? A field of flowers attracts beautiful butterflies and bees, while a swamp attracts mosquitoes and other insects. Well that is because one environment is alkaline, while the latter is acidic.

Science has found that organisms that carry disease, such as mosquitoes, prefer an acidic environment. It is easiest to think of it this way: acidic attracts disease, while alkaline protects health.

Our body acidity or alkalinity predicts our environment. Just like a swamp or a field of fresh flowers it can either harbor disease or flourish. Although it is debatable, many experts believe that disease cannot live in an alkaline environment, yet it thrives and grows in an acidic environment.

Again, it is debatable, but I do believe that your body functions best when it is in an alkaline state because until two years ago, I was someone who used to be out of shape and overweight. I was not following a healthy natural diet and I was not exercising. I felt awful and got sick all the time.

I got the flu or the common cold six to ten times a year. I was depressed and had little to no energy. Since discovering the difference between alkaline and acid body chemistry I have made an active effort to make my body healthier and more alkaline.

Since then I rarely have gotten sick, I have more energy, and have had more tolerance to exercise. Most importantly I have been able to maintain the proper body weight, which is something I have always battled with.

Well how did I get my body more alkaline? I ate more organic fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. I made sure that I cut down on the acidic influences in my diet: red meat, dairy products, pasta sauce, coffee, alcohol, processed foods (fast food), deep fried foods, and chemical pollutants (pesticides, hormones etc.).

If you would like to find out your body's acid/alkaline chemistry go to your local health food store. They should have pH test strips you can buy that test your saliva. They are cheap, easy, accurate, and the roles of the strips allow you to test yourself many times. I test myself once a month or so.

If your body is acidic and you would like to try to make it more alkaline to see if you notice a difference in your overall health, you should maintain a dietary ratio of 75% alkaline to 25% acidic, this is what worked for me. Also exercise, or sweat a lot, this is your body's natural way of getting rid of toxic chemicals and pollutants that can make your body acidic.

It should also be noted that one way the body naturally protects against really high acidic levels is by using calcium as a natural buffer. If your body is highly acidic and you are not getting enough calcium through your diet or supplements your body will naturally pull calcium from your teeth, bones, to buffer the acidity. This is not good because it can make your bones and teeth brittle.

Some people's bodies are naturally more acidic or alkaline than others. You may or may not be able to get away with eating more acidic foods than other people. Always remember that everybody is different and you need to be as educated as you can on YOUR body and what makes YOU feel good and healthy.

Pay attention to how often you get sick in relation to certain foods, or toxins you are putting into your body. Make an active effort to test yourself and put good healthy food and supplements into your body, you will feel healthier.

The first thing many people do in the morning is to consume orange juice, toast, honey, sweet rolls, muffins, waffles, pancakes etc. This over-acidifies the cell system and promotes high levels of yeast and fungi to grow inside the body, because huge amounts of sugar and simple carbohydrates are ingested. The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet

 

What can be done about food addictions? Give them all up at once and see if there are any you can do without.

Suggestions For Weight Loss:

Nearly raw potatoes. These are effective in reducing hunger pangs.

Ice pack. Placed on the lower abdomen, it takes away the appetite.

Raw honey. The brand Really Raw contains the starch digesting enzyme amylase, which disposes of excess nutrients.

Raw milk and butter. These are hard to find, but worth tracking down because of their rich supply of the fat-digesting enzyme lipase and the enzyme protease, which breaks down protein.

Ice water. Drink a lot of ice water, especially before a meal. This reduces weight because in order to maintain the body's internal temperature, which has dropped due to the cold water, the body burns up additional calories.

One hard and fast rule all dieters should follow: no junk food before breakfast. A junk-food snack first thing in the morning ferments and putrefies in the stomach. Any healthy food eaten afterward, exposed to the bacteria in the putrefying and fermenting junk-food molecules, is also broken down into toxic waste by these bacteria.

The most critical factor in any weight-loss program is the efficient digestion of foods. Complete digestion means fewer acidic wastes. This has at least three advantages. First, appetite cravings are reduced (toxic acidic food residues create abnormal hunger pangs). Second, fewer acidic wastes means less fat sticks to the ribs. Third, reduction in toxic acidic wastes makes for a more alkaline environment in the body. This in turn increases the production of food-digesting enzymes. The more enzymes that break down food molecules in the gastrointestinal tract, the less food remains undigested and the better the chances to attain the ultimate in efficient digestion and consequent weight loss: oxidation (burning) of 97 percent of the food you eat.

The miso soup is an ideal way to have miso, which is a highly alkalizing food. Alkaline recipes are all healthy and low of fat. So having them means you kill two birds with one stone. Not only does one shed those unwanted pounds but also gain good health. Take 2 tsp of Miso and add it to some water. Bring to a boil adding iodine sea salt to taste. This one of the alkaline recipes is ideal for a cold winter day.

Another great pick from the basket of alkaline recipes is the green salad. Take a few salad leaves, some chopped cabbage, a small chopped onion and a large tomatoes. Mix all the vegetables adding a bit of vinegar for taste and throwing in some oregano and some tofu or boiled chicken breast pieces. Of all the alkaline recipes this one is definitely my favorite. All the foods we eat can be divided into three broad categories namely, alkalizing foods, acidic foods and neutral foods. The foods on the list of alkaline foods when burnt leave an alkaline ash as opposed to acidic foods that leave and acidic ash. The ratio between the acidic ash and alkaline ash should be 20 /80 respectably. To maintain this ratio over 80% of our food should constitute of items from the list of alkaline foods.

Most vegetable and fruits are on the list of alkaline foods. Cabbages. Lettuce, potatoes, bamboo shoots, broccoli, garlic, sprouts and almost all vegetables are to be found on the list of alkaline foods. But this is not to say that sour fruits like lemons or citrus fruits are not alkaline. Melons and grapes are also highly alkaline in nature and should be consumed in plenty. Fruits and vegetables if eaten raw also provide a dual purpose of not only energy but also fiber.

Even though it may seem that only vegetable and fruits are to be found on the list of alkalizing foods but this is not the case. Dairy products have a slot too on the list of alkaline foods. Acidophilus milk, buttermilk, yogurt and whey are all dairy products that are on the list of alkaline foods. Milk is also alkaline but only in its raw form. All processed forms of dairy are acidic and should not be consumed in large quantities. For those who are inclined to non-vegetarian diet meats are a clear no. For those looking for some protein there is chicken breast, which is alkaline and can be eaten for good health. Other meats are all acidic and should form no more the 20 % of ones diet.

For the beverage drinker there is herbal tea and coffee substitute on the list of alkaline foods. Lemonade made with stevia and sea salt is also highly alkaline and very refreshing. Alcohol is extremely damaging and is totally off the list of alkaline foods. Honey, almonds and fresh coconut all have their special place on the list of alkaline food.

"Correct your acid / alkaline balance with the water you drink: what the experts say"

 

In health circles there has been much recent talk about acid /alkaline imbalance. Let's see if we can clarify how experts recommend we correct this imbalance.

The problem
Your body functions best when neither too acid nor too alkaline. Unfortunately almost all of us have become acidic due to diet, drinks and stress -- both psychological and from pollution. Acids can build up in our body, causing systems to be out of balance.

The effects
According to Dr. Stefan Kuprowsky, "Acid wastes build up in the body in the form of cholesterol, gallstones, kidney stones, arterial plaque, urates, phosphates and sulfates. These acidic waste products are the direct cause of premature aging and the onset of chronic disease."
